There are about 50,000 pools on Mallorca - no place around the Mediterranean has a density anywhere near as high as Mallorca. In the last 6 years, about 5,271 new pools have been built - and that includes pools in the immediate vicinity of the coast. That's about 17 new pools every week. Activists are now calling for a halt to the construction of new private pools. In its water management plan, the Balearic state government wants to recommend to the municipalities that at least the size of the pools should be limited.
On Mallorca there are so far only a few legal restrictions for the construction of pools. If you have a plot of land in an urban area, you are free to build your pool as large as you like. In rural areas, however, there are specific regulations that you must follow: The plots of land must be at least 15,000 square meters in size for you to be allowed to build at all. It is then possible to build on 300 square meters, whereby the pool and the property are combined. However, the pool in the rural area may not be larger than 35 square meters, so that the pool can hold a maximum of 60 cubic meters of water. In addition, you must keep in mind here that only a maximum of one pool may be built on each property.
The pool boom is particularly noticeable in new construction projects. Around 80 percent of building applications include the construction of a pool. No wonder, because a pool naturally increases the value of your property by as much as 30-50 percent.
Pool owners, however, have to deal with a major problem: The pool water evaporates due to the hot temperatures - up to 16 million liters per day! Because of the drought, however, pools are sometimes not allowed to be refilled.
A pool cover could provide a remedy here. On average, a pool loses up to two inches of water and thus about 500 liters per week. Most pool builders therefore recommend a pool cover.
Electricity consumption is also becoming more and more present due to rising electricity and energy prices. Especially during the season the pumps run many hours a day. Feel free to read our article on salt electrolysis, because freshwater pools consume more electricity and energy than saltwater pools.
One positive point should be noted at this point: The pool industry secures up to 10,000 jobs in Mallorca.
We hope that we could give you with this article many exciting insights on the subject of pool.
